MUSIC FOR THE INNER GEEK for September the Third, 2009

geek
GEEK TOP

I think it’s safe to say that Geek music began here, in the 1980s when a weird looking Thomas Dolby struck out with this ditty about … well I’m not really sure.  It’s about an Oriental woman who is apparently so versed in the ways of science that she blinds a guy.  Not literally blinding, you understand, more of a metaphysical blinding.
Dolby had a minor hit with this song, but seemed to slowly fade out of the spotlight into the “where is he now” file.
I don’t know where he is, but I do know that released a few albums, worked on a few soundtracks (including Howard The Duck) and is probably living a comfortable life somewhere.  If you are interested in hearing more from Dolby I suggest tracking down Europa and the Pirate Twins, my personal favourite Thomas Dolby song.

This next one isn’t so much a geek song as it is a comedy song that touches on geek.  From the classic movie Monty Python’s Meaning of Life comes The Universe Song.  It’s purpose in the movie is to show how small we all are, but I dare you to find a true geek who can’t recite the lyrics perfectly.

Lets skootch ahead a few years.  The show is The Big Bang Theory, a TV sit-com about four friends who are brilliant and their inability to communicate with the rest of humanity.  They are also big geeks, with constant references to comics, sci-fi, gaming etc.
The theme song to this show was written and performed by The Barenaked Ladies.  The video was done by a film student as an assignment, but was so well received that the good people at CBS made it the unofficial music video to the song.  The show, by the way, is a fantastic show that every geek should watch.

Finally, the reason I started this post.  (You had to know there was a nefarious reason behind it.)  The following song is by a group named Kirby Krackle.  They call themselves the worlds first comic book band, and they may just be.
The problem with bands with such a focus is that they tend to focus so much on their subject matter (In this case comic books) that they don’t focus on the music.  Kirby Krackle focuses on the music.  The following is my favourite song from their first album.  It’s called Marvelous Girls and is a tribute to the women of Marvel Comics.
